Immunology studies the biological and biochemical basis of the body’s defense against pathogens and other foreign substances. Due to the central role of the human immune system in a large number of diseases, immunology is of great importance in medicine for the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Among other things, the working group conducts research into the immune system’s ability to fight off pathogens. For example, she is investigating the possibility of recognizing germs by smell or the intelligent defence mechanisms of the cilia in the respiratory tract. The researchers are also focusing on methods for the early detection of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s.

At the Zweibrücken campus of Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences, the working group offers ideal conditions for this. Through the cooperation with other working groups and companies within and outside the Campus, synergy effects are created that lead to a broader understanding of the problems.
